Pet owners are being urged to be on the look-out for signs of post traumatic stress in the wake of the floods, with vets warning dogs and cats can be just as emotionally scarred as humans. Veterinarians are preparing to cope with large numbers of distressed animals over the coming weeks and months, the Australian Veterinary Association said today.
“Dogs and cats that survive disasters can suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder in the same way as humans,” said animal behaviour specialist Kersti Seksel.
Pets that have been separated from their owners and who have lost their homes can suffer from separation anxiety related problems.
